Chris from moneysupermarket.com has some special travel tips for the Bed&Fed community
Money Saving Tips for the Savvy Traveller
With the ever rising cost of living, coupled with steadily climbing oil prices, travelling is becoming more expensive than ever.
Indeed, with the advent of the passenger tax introduced in countries such as Ireland and Germany (a per passenger charge for flights entering the country) and escalating taxes, finding a truly cheap holiday or flight – with no hidden extras – is more elusive than ever.
So what can you do to save money on your next holiday?
Money Saving Tips
Travel insurance: Deciding against the purchase of travel insurance can be a false economy. Rather than saving you money, it may end up costing you much more in the long run should something go amiss whilst you are travelling. Equally, be careful not to purchase cover when you may have a holiday insurance policy already. Many bank accounts and credit cards now offer account holders free travel insurance (check the small print for cover levels). Doubling up on cover will not give you double the protection, in actuality; it could slow the claims process down and is just not necessary. Make use of a price comparison website to compare a range of insurers and be sure to opt for a policy based on the features and cover level it provides and not just because it is the cheapest offering.
European health insurance card (EHIC): If you plan to travel within Europe, it is a good idea to apply for a free EHIC (you need to have a valid National Insurance Number). Should you require emergency medical treatment in an EU member country, the card will give you free or reduced cost treatment and will work in synergy with your travel insurance.
Travel during the week: If you can be flexible with the days you travel, opting for flights in the middle of the week will save you some of your hard earned cash. Travel companies charge for the convenience of travelling during the weekend, but for those with no children and a flexible absence policy at their place of work, travelling during the week will be quieter and cost much less.
Book in advance: Late availability holidays may save you a bundle but avoid leaving transportation arrangements till the last minute as this is one cost that escalates closer to the time rather than becoming cheaper. If you need to book a separate flight or ferry crossing then do this as early as possible to get early bird rates.
Opt for all-inclusive: Believe it or not, you can find all-inclusive holidays which don't involve the all-you-can-eat buffet or being roped into taking part in various "fun" activities. Better still, if you are brave enough to leave it till the last minute, you should be able to secure yourself a late-availability at an all-inclusive resort for much cheaper.
Have a staycation: If cash is tight but you fancy a break away, why not stay in the UK?
Opting for a vacation in the UK should save you money on transportation costs and allows you to explore some of Britain's beautiful scenery (believe it or not foreign tourists do travel to the UK on their holidays). Make use of a brilliant scheme like Bed & Fed to help you find cheap accommodation in lovely homes and with good company thrown into the bargain.

Congratulations to Bed&Feder in Devon for FAB review!
Congratulations to Caroline Lowes (Mill Barton) in Devon who received this glowing review!
"The picture does not do this historic medieval farmhouse justice. Mill Barton has been beautifully restored by Caroline and David Lowes and nestles on the side of its own private little valley with a stream running through it and horses and cattle grazing peacefully in the fields. Caroline cooks wonderful food (much of the fruit and vegetables home produced) at her Aga in a big family kitchen. The whole house is beautifully decorated and packed with antique furniture and country furnishings. The bedrooms are very comfortable with wonderful views across the mature garden which surrounds the house and the valley. There is even a swimming pool and tennis court. A perfect place to stay ..."

Congratulations Mrs Whitten in Perthshire for you fantastic new review!
"I had a fantastic stay here, lovely people and a lovely comfortable bed. The room and attached sitting room are very private and the surrounding countryside is a superb place to explore. I fully recommend a visit - perfect for a weekend break. (Margaret is an excellent chef!)"
Also here is a wonderful review from a Host about one of her guests:
"We had a lovely B&F guest to stay last night. Very chatty and fun - and he brought a lovely bottle of wine with him. He was very complimentary about the comfortable bed, our home, the supper and loved playing with our dog. Perfect guest."
Happy New Year Bed&Feders! xx
